Career Assessment

In order to guess whether a career might be a good fit for you, you need to know a little about yourself!  This may sound obvious, but often we don't take the time to truly assess our skills, interests, pesonality, or values. One way to learn more about yourself is through assessments. They can help you generate career options based on your interests, skills, values, and personality traits. Career Services individualized interpretation format will add clarity to your results.

Career Services offers three assessments:

SIGI3 Career and Self-Assessment Tool - Free

 SIGI3 — pronounced “siggy three” for System of Interactive Guidance and Information — is a special tool that can help you to plan your career. Among the features offered on SIGI3 you will find tools to help you research occupations, choose, change, or clarify a major, and evaluate your interests, skills, values and personality. You can access the system through Beaver JobNet. Once in Beaver JobNet, click "Log-in to SIGI3" on the right side under Career Counseling & Exploration.

Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) - $14

The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is a personality assessment that's often used in career counseling. It's one extra helpful tool in learning about yourself and the kind of work settings that may feel most natural, and also helps you understand how you approach the career decision-making process.

Strong Interest Inventory, SII (Holland Codes) - $14

The Strong Interest Inventory (SII) can help you gain a better awareness of your career-related interests. It is one of the most popular personality assessment tools. The modern version shows how certain interests compare with the interests of people successfully employed in specific occupations.

The results include:

  1. An overview of your interest themes.
  2. A break-down of your interests within those themes.
  3. A summary of your work-style preferences.
  4. Lists of specific occupations, and how well they fit with your reported interests.
  5. Several great ideas for ways to pursue your interests, such as coursework, organizations, and internship settings

Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), the Strong Interest Inventory (SII), and SIGI3 each explore your interests and personality in a slightly different way. This is valuable for students who are looking to choose, change, or clarify a major, or just want to learn more about themselves.

Internship Predictor is another online assessment that is a quick and easy process to help you evaluate your personal preferences and show how they can help you pursue and secure the right internship. It is FREE!

If you are interested in career assessments, follow these steps:

1. We first encourage you to  schedule an appointment with a career counselor to make sure these assessments are right for you.

2. If after meeting with a career counselor you decide to do a career assessment(s), depending on which one you  choose, you will first pay for it either in person in Career Services with cash or check or you can pay for it online with a credit card (the link will be provided by your career counselor when you meet with them at your first appointment). Both the MBTI and SII assessments cost $14 each, while SIGI3 is free and you can log-in to the system through Beaver JobNet - click "Log-in to SIGI3" on your Beaver JobNet homepage on the right side under Career Counseling & Exploration. YOU DON'T HAVE TO MEET WITH A CAREER COUNSELOR IN ORDER TO DO SIGI3.

3. If doing the MBTI or SII, once we receive your payment, your career counselor will email you log-in instructions to complete the assessment(s).

4. Once you have completed the assessment(s), schedule an appointment with your career counselor for each assessment to go over your results.

NOTE: Self-assessment can involve much more than taking an inventory. Our career counselors can teach you how to engage in your own self-assessment, which you will use for a lifetime.  Counselors can guide you in assessing your values, and help you explore how your unique background and experiences play a role in your developing career goals.
